Male Depression Is More Serious Than Women’s

by Milos Pesic

Depression is very common to women, but it doesn’t mean that men are spared from this disabling condition. Depression usually develops differently in men than it does in women, probably because women are more emotional than men. But then again, male depression is much serious that it can be life threatening if immediate attention and treatment are not given.

Male depression is well observed when men are always irritable, isolated and withdrawn, who find work as fortress of solitude. Drinking too much alcohol, using prohibited drugs, or seeking excitement from extreme activities can also be a sign of male depression. The possible coping strategies of those men with depression may be casual sex, reckless driving, or shutting themselves off from the world. But, all of these things are not enough to keep them at bay for long.

We all know or those sensible people know that any problems can’t easily be shoved off with barrels of alcoholic drinks or drugs, or by letting them pass by; they will just make things worse. Male depression is a serious medical disorder that needs to be treated before it’s too late. What will happen to men sufferers of depression is that they have negative thoughts; they underestimate their personal and professional lives, and places themselves at higher risk of other illnesses. But the worse that can happen is they may lead to suicide. The risk of suicide in depressed men is four times greater than depressed women.

Men are taught to be independent and have strong self-control and that it is unlikely for men to express pain, weakness, doubt, and sadness. This is why they see emotional condition as a threat to their image, resulting to denial or hiding away. When depressed men go to doctors, they are likely to focus only on physical complaints such as headaches, or chronic pain rather than on their emotional dilemma. This is also why it becomes difficult for the doctors to establish any connection between those symptoms and depression. Even if men are diagnosed to have depression, they still refuse mental health care, again, due to their fear of losing their macho image or respect from family and friends.

Depression can be associated with other life-threatening medical conditions which can possibly end a man’s life earlier, such as, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and HIV/AIDS. Other conditions associated with male depression include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), erectile dysfunction (ED), and job stress.

Depression may have a huge effect on everyone’s life, most especially to your health or worse life. As for male depression, it has always been a serious subject they just can’t easily express or talk about. Instead, they tend to swerve to the path of the worst consequence of depression, which is suicide. With this in mind, it only reminds us how severe depression could be; depression should not be taken for granted.
