Do You Need Help Helping Someone With Depression?
by Foras Aje
Needless to say, depression can be a matter of life and death. Since it affects roughly 25% of the population each year, chances are you may know someone who suffers from this terrible illness.
The not so good new is helping someone with depression can be frustrating at times. Many depressed people dont want to be helped. They might view it as appearing weak or needy or simply that you are butting into their business…and just snap at you for it.
You may have experienced this before and decide: “hey thats his problem…I got my own issues.” But Friend, that is the wrong approach. Not everyone would put up a defense for you to help them out.
Many people suffer from depression needlessly all because they wont ask for help. Let them know that you care and just want to make sure that they are okay. Sometimes if the person wont take the initiative, you may have to take the necessary steps for them to begin overcoming their depression.
Be kind but at the same time, be firm. Helping a friend or relative who suffers from Depression is no easy task, but it can be lifesaving.
Makes attempts to let them know you empathize with them and really do care, try to identify emotionally with them. Be sensitive to their feelings and realize that they really are in emotional pain. What they are feeling is real so try to be understanding.
Other ways to help a depressed person may be to encourage them to talk and be ready to be a good listener. Be aware that this is no time to offer criticism or judgment, but rather understanding, since most depression sufferers have very low self-esteem.
If the victim of depression is a spouse, this may be the time to be that better and more supportive half. This may also be the time for you to be that patient and understanding one.
Other drug-free alternatives you could encourage the one you are helping to look into include-but are not limited to-Proper Exercise, Diet and Positive Thinking.
Keep in mind too that little gestures such as phone calls, visits, emails, cards and the like can be very helpful for building up a depression victims morale. So, if you know someone who suffers from Depression, always be patient, show empathy and assist them in any way you can.
Dont expect someone with depression to get well overnight. It can be a slow process at times but with patience, the right attitude and strength it can be overcome.
Heres to Happiness.
