In this article we will look at some of the signs displayed with workplace depression. We will look at how to recognize it and ways you can help.

Educating yourself about depression is the first step. If you have an employee that is suffering from depression, even if their condition is under control, they may not be your best worker. Look out for low productivity. Keep in mind that this isn?t a character flaw, it is an illness.

Sometimes those that are depressed stop caring about their own safety. If you notice them taking a lot of unnecessary risks then this is a sign. If they seem highly accident prone this is another indicator.

Look out for frequent mood changes. They may go from anger to sadness and even become uncooperative.

You should look out for low morale. If the seem to be complaining about several aspects of their life then depression could be a definite possibility.

IF they seem to be constantly tired then this could be a cause for concern. Depression can cause chronic fatigue. If they seem tired all the time or constantly complain about feeling fatigued then you may want to be concerned.

If these employees seems to be absent a lot then again, this could be a sign of depression. Many will call in with colds and flu symptoms since no one will except calling in depressed.

Sometimes the depressed person will self medicate with drugs and alcohol. If this is apparent then there should be cause for concern. This problem needs to be dealt with quite urgently.

Workplace depression does exist and can be treated. As an employer the first thing you need to do is learn to recognize the signs. Next you need to educate yourself about depression. Finally, you need to encourage your employee to seek help. These are some of the best ways an employer can fight workplace depression.
