Working a Depression Treatment Plan That Works for You

by Juliann Longden

Unfortunately there isnt a universal depression treatment plan. Depression treatments really vary depending on each persons condition. Some people only experience depression symptoms occasionally and can use self-help techniques to rid themselves of depression. Others face much more challenging obstacles and need to use medication to get rid of their depression symptoms.

What is Depression?

Depression is an extremely debilitating mental disease. People suffering from depression have a difficult time doing anything, even getting out of bed. They feel worthless, out of touch with the world, they cant sleep, experience anxiety and often times cant figure out why life is worth living. Depressed people feel a general feeling of hopelessness and despair.

Treating Depression

Depression is a serious mental disease however, many who suffer from depression will benefit from developing a personal self-help plan. A key component to developing a successful depression self-help plan is learning to lean on others. Your family and friends are your support system so use them. Once you recognize that youre suffering from depression, share this with your family. Let them know your symptoms of depression. This will help them recognize the problem in many cases before you do, allowing them to help you initiate your self-help plan.

When you feel depressed, you want to stay in doors, change your eating patterns and block yourself off from the world. However, you should do the opposite. When you feel depressed force yourself to go to the gym and get some exercise. Force yourself to go to a movie with friends. Force yourself to get a good eight hours of sleep and eat right. When you recognize that youre avoiding these activities because youre depressed and force yourself to do them, youll start pulling yourself out of your depression.

It should be noted that this type of plan will only work for someone who has mild depression. People who suffer severely from depression or other mental disorders such as bi-polar disorder, may need to take medication. Depression medications regulate a persons mental chemical makeup, which has a stabilizing effect. If your self help depression treatment doesnt work, seek help from a psychiatrist or other mental health professional.
